Company Overview Covega Technologies
Thorlabs (www.thorlabs.com) acquired Covega Technology and renamed the company “Thorlabs Quantum Electronics”, a world-class developer of InP and LiNbO3 proprietary technologies. Their superior product performance is supported by a manufacturing infrastructure capable of producing high performance optical devices and modules designed to meet the needs of a diverse customer base. Today, Thorlabs Quantum Electronics is a leading provider of state-of-the-art opto-electronic components and subsystems with a wide range of products and services. Superior product performance, resulting from proprietary intellectual knowledge of InP and LiNbO3 technologies, sets Covega Technology, apart from its competitors. With early focus on the telecom, datacom, and CATV industries, Covega Technology, now generates over one-third of its revenue from serving the defense, medical, industrial, sensing, test & measurement, and instrumentation industries.
Gain Chips
The company’s Single Angle Facet (SAF) solution, which is a high-power InP active waveguide gain element, permits superior performance for external cavity, tunable lasers by providing broad bandwidth, high power, and stable operation. The enhanced functionality is achieved by using a proprietary SAF and reliable ridge waveguides that are manufactured in large quantities in Covega’s in-house production facility. The result is a substantial cost savings for the gain chips, while maintaining state of the art performance. For a complete listing of the available products please download the complete catalog.
Semiconductor Optical Amplifiers (SOAs)
Covega’s line of SOA products deliver industry-leading performance by offering high-saturation power, large gain, and low noise. Covega’s InP devices are based on highly efficient multi-quantum well structures. Manufacturing processes are based on well-proven six-sigma-based chip fabrication processes. These InP products deliver high gain over a broad spectral bandwidth and are ideally suited for communication systems, instrumentation, photonics sensors, scientific applications, and fiber optic gyros. A subset of the optical amplifier product line is available online, for a complete listing of the available products please download the complete catalog.
Indium Phosphide Products
Covega’s InP products are designed for use in the 1050-1850 nm spectral range and are typically found in telecommunication, medical instrumentation, and sensor applications. Covega’s InP product families include SAF gain block, Semiconductor Optical Amplifiers (SOA), Booster Optical Amplifiers (BOA), Fabry–Perot Lasers, Broad-Area Lasers, and Super Luminescent diodes (SLD). Chip-on-submount, chip-on-heat-sink, butterfly, and Dual in-line (DIL) packages are also available. For a complete listing of the available products please download the complete catalog.
Lithium Niobate
The company’s LiNbO3 technology offers a family of high performance, Telcordia-compliant, external optical intensity and phase modulators with industry-leading long-term reliability. The intensity modulators are based on Mach-Zehnder interferometers and are fabricated using titanium-indiffused Lithium Niobate substrates fabricated in Covega’s in-house production facility. Covega’s exclusive bias-trimming technology allows for the operation of intensity modulators near-zero volts at any desired operating point (quadrature, maximum, or minimum), which leads to cost savings and operability enhancements for many telecom and non-telecom system applications.
Covega modulators are based on x-cut and z-cut LiNbO3 wafers and can be configured to either zero-chirp or a fixed chirp. Modulators for emerging telecom applications, such as dual quadrature phase shift key modulation (DQPSK), are in development, and early samples are available. By controlling manufacturing using six-sigma-based processes, Covega is able to produce a high yield of LiNbO3 products with a high degree of repeatability in their in-house Maryland production facility. Covega’s LiNbO3 products deliver superior performance over 10 Gb/s to 40 Gb/s and are ideally suited for communication systems, interferometric fiber optic gyroscopes, and other aerospace applications.
Covega LiNbO3 product families include 10 Gb/s and 40 Gb/s zero-chirp and fixed-chirp intensity modulators, 10 Gb/s modulators integrated with variable optical attenuators, modulators integrated with drivers, and chirp-controlled phase modulators.
